Overview

uTorrent has stayed small the whole time it has been popular. The client is a few megabytes, it starts instantly, and it handles hundreds of active torrents without becoming a resource problem. Everything the protocol supports is there: DHT, peer exchange, magnet links, local peer discovery, encryption, and per-torrent bandwidth control.

The Pro configuration removes the advertising panels that the free client displays, which alone changes how the interface feels. It also adds streaming playback so a file can be watched while it is still transferring, and a converter for turning finished files into formats a phone or a television will accept.

The scheduling and bandwidth features are what make it usable on a shared connection. Set upload and download caps that change by hour, cap the connection count, prioritise individual files inside a torrent, and let it seed overnight while staying out of the way during the day. The web interface allows remote management from another machine on the network.

Before you start

Use separate folders for incomplete and finished transfers, it keeps media libraries from indexing partial files.

About this listing

This entry was checked on a clean install of Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 before it was published, and it is rechecked whenever the package is rebuilt. The figures on this page come from the site index rather than from the publisher, so the download count is what people here have actually pulled.

If a mirror stops answering, use the contact form and it gets replaced. Reports about a specific title are handled faster than general messages because they name the file, the mirror and the point at which the transfer stopped.

Requests for a different version, a different language build or an older release go on the requests page. Older versions of a title are usually still held even when only the current one is listed.
