ACDSee started as a fast image browser and never lost that quality, which is the main reason photographers with very large archives keep coming back to it. It browses the file system directly rather than requiring an import into a catalogue first, so plugging in a drive and looking through it happens instantly instead of after an indexing pass.
The Ultimate configuration is the one that carries layers. Most asset managers stop at raw adjustments, and ACDSee continues into a full layered editor with masks, blend modes, adjustment layers, selection tools and text, meaning a file can go from import to finished composite without leaving the application. The develop mode handles raw processing with tone curves, colour wheels, lens corrections, noise reduction and a light equaliser, all non-destructively.
The management side is thorough. Ratings, colour labels, hierarchical keywords, categories, face recognition, geographic tagging and a database that can hold metadata for files sitting on offline drives so an archive stays searchable when the disks are on a shelf. Batch processing runs conversions, renames, resizing and watermarking across thousands of files, and the whole thing works from a plain folder structure rather than demanding that files be moved into a managed library.

Installation

Before you start
The database holds metadata rather than the images, but it is still worth backing up separately.
Cataloguing offline drives keeps them searchable, but the files themselves obviously need reconnecting to edit.
Turn off the update check so the installed build stays as it is.
