Overview
InDesign is where long documents get built. Books, magazines, catalogues, annual reports, anything where hundreds of pages have to stay consistent and then go to a press without a fight. Word cannot do it and a vector tool should not try.
The structural tools do the work. Master pages carry the grid and running heads, paragraph and character styles cascade formatting across a whole book, nested styles format a line from its own punctuation, and object styles do the same for frames. Text threads across pages and reflows when a story grows, with the book panel keeping numbering and styles synchronised across separate documents.
Output is the other half. Preflight runs live against a profile while you work, so a missing font or a low resolution link is flagged before delivery. Package collects the document, its links and its fonts into one folder. Export covers PDF/X for print, interactive PDF with buttons and video, EPUB reflowable and fixed layout, and HTML for a content handoff.
What it does well
Styles that cascade
Paragraph, character, object, table and cell styles, with nested and GREP styles that format text from its own content.
Master pages and grids
Baseline grids, layout adjustment and master page inheritance so a five hundred page document stays aligned throughout.
Book and long document tools
The book panel synchronises styles and numbering across documents, with generated tables of contents and indexes.
Data merge
Merge a spreadsheet into a layout for catalogues, name badges and price lists, with image field support.

About this listing
This entry was checked on a clean install of Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) before it was published, and it is rechecked whenever the package is rebuilt. The figures on this page come from the site index rather than from the publisher, so the download count is what people here have actually pulled.
If a mirror stops answering, use the contact form and it gets replaced. Reports about a specific title are handled faster than general messages because they name the file, the mirror and the point at which the transfer stopped.
Requests for a different version, a different language build or an older release go on the requests page. Older versions of a title are usually still held even when only the current one is listed.
