Overview

Bridge is a browser rather than a catalogue, and for a lot of people that is exactly the right model. It reads folders as they sit on disk, shows real previews of the file types a general file manager renders as blank icons, and never asks you to import anything. Move a folder and nothing breaks, because there was no database claiming to own it.

The preview coverage is the reason it earns a place. Layered raster documents, vector artwork, page layout files, raw camera files, video, audio, fonts and colour swatch files all render properly, with multi page documents paging through in the preview panel. Fonts preview with sample text, and colour swatch files show the actual swatches instead of a generic icon.

Around the browsing sits the housekeeping that nobody enjoys doing by hand. Batch renaming with sequence tokens and metadata fields, metadata templates applied across a selection, keyword hierarchies, star ratings and colour labels, filtering by any metadata field, and an export module that produces sized copies from a selection in one pass. Files hand off into the editing applications directly, and placed assets can be traced back to where they came from.

What it does well

Previews for real formats

Layered documents, vector art, page layouts, raw files, fonts, swatches, video and audio all render properly rather than as blank icons.

Batch renaming

Rename a selection using sequence numbers, dates, folder names and metadata fields, with a preview of the result before committing.

Metadata and keywords

Apply metadata templates across a selection, maintain keyword hierarchies, and filter a folder by any field including camera settings.

Export module

Produce sized and converted copies of a selection in one operation, with reusable presets for common delivery sizes.

Handoff to editors

Open a selection straight into the matching application, place assets into a layout, and batch process through the editor without leaving the browser.

Changes in this build

  • Thumbnail generation reworked, which cut the first pass time on large folders considerably.
  • Preview support added for more current camera raw formats.
  • Filter panel rebuilt with multi criteria selection and saved filter sets.
  • Export presets now carry colour space and metadata stripping options.
  • Reduced memory use when browsing folders holding tens of thousands of files.

Before you start

The cache can grow large on big archives, it is safe to purge and rebuild.

Exported cache files can travel with a folder so previews are instant on another machine.

It browses folders rather than importing them, so nothing is moved or renamed unless you ask.

About this listing

This entry was checked on a clean install of Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit) before it was published, and it is rechecked whenever the package is rebuilt. The figures on this page come from the site index rather than from the publisher, so the download count is what people here have actually pulled.

If a mirror stops answering, use the contact form and it gets replaced. Reports about a specific title are handled faster than general messages because they name the file, the mirror and the point at which the transfer stopped.

Requests for a different version, a different language build or an older release go on the requests page. Older versions of a title are usually still held even when only the current one is listed.
