Overview

Lightroom 6 is the last release of the perpetual line, and it still gets installed for exactly that reason. It runs on modest hardware, holds a catalogue of tens of thousands of frames, and does the full import, cull, develop, print and export cycle without any part of it depending on something outside the machine.

The develop module covers the core raw pipeline: exposure, tone curve, HSL, split toning, detail and noise reduction, lens correction, transform, and the local adjustment tools with the graduated filter, radial filter and adjustment brush. There is no subject or sky detection here, that arrived in the later line, but the manual tools are the same ones and they still produce the same results in careful hands.

Around develop sits the library everything else is built on. Collections and smart collections, keyword hierarchies, flags, ratings and colour labels, face recognition, and the output modules for print layout, web galleries, slideshows and book design. Edits are non-destructive and stored in the catalogue, so an original file is never rewritten.

What it does well

Runs on modest hardware

Comfortable on machines that struggle with the current release, which keeps older laptops usable as editing machines.

Full manual develop tools

Exposure, curves, HSL, detail, lens correction, transform and local adjustments with graduated, radial and brush masks.

Catalogue library

Collections, smart collections, keyword hierarchies, flags and labels across tens of thousands of images.

Output modules

Print layout with soft proofing, web galleries, slideshows and the book module with full page layout control.

Non-destructive

Every edit lives in the catalogue. Virtual copies cost nothing and the original file stays untouched.

  5. Set the preview cache size before importing a large shoot.

Before you start

A catalogue written by a newer Lightroom will not open here, the format only moves forward.

Camera support stops at the bodies this release knew about, newer raw files need converting to DNG first.

Turn off the update check so it does not keep offering to move you to the subscription line.

Questions about this title

Is this the subscription version?

No, this is the last standalone perpetual release.

Will it read raw files from a new camera?

Only if you convert them to DNG first, native support stops with this release.

Can it open a catalogue from Lightroom Classic?

No, catalogues only upgrade forward. Export the images instead.

Does it include the book module?

Yes, book, print, web and slideshow output modules are all present.

About this listing

This entry was checked on a clean install of Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 (64-bit) before it was published, and it is rechecked whenever the package is rebuilt. The figures on this page come from the site index rather than from the publisher, so the download count is what people here have actually pulled.

If a mirror stops answering, use the contact form and it gets replaced. Reports about a specific title are handled faster than general messages because they name the file, the mirror and the point at which the transfer stopped.

Requests for a different version, a different language build or an older release go on the requests page. Older versions of a title are usually still held even when only the current one is listed.
