Overview
VueScan exists because scanner manufacturers abandon drivers. A perfectly good flatbed or film scanner stops working after an operating system upgrade, the vendor has moved on, and the hardware becomes a paperweight. VueScan carries its own driver set for several thousand devices and talks to them directly, which brings a lot of that hardware back to life.
Beyond rescuing old hardware, it is simply a better scanning application than most of what ships in the box. Multi-pass scanning reduces noise in shadow areas, the colour engine carries profiles for hundreds of film stocks so negatives invert to something close to correct rather than a muddy orange cast, and infrared cleaning uses the fourth channel on scanners that have one to remove dust and scratches before the image is ever saved.
The Professional configuration adds the parts that matter for archival work: raw scan files written as DNG so the original sensor data is preserved and can be reprocessed later without touching the hardware again, IT8 colour calibration against a target, automatic document feeder support with blank page detection, and batch scanning with file naming templates and direct output to searchable PDF through the built in text recognition.

Installation
- Connect the scanner and power it on before installing.
- Extract the archive and run the installer.
- Apply the included configuration step before first launch.
- Open the application and confirm the device is detected in the source list.
- Set the output folder, file format and bit depth before the first real scan.
Before you start
The vendor driver does not need to be removed, but only one application should hold the device at a time.
Scanning at the optical resolution of the hardware is the useful ceiling, anything above that is interpolation.
Infrared cleaning does not work on silver halide black and white film, the emulsion blocks the channel.
