Overview

This is a reduced Windows 7 Professional image aimed squarely at machines that cannot carry anything newer: old laptops, single board industrial PCs, shop floor terminals and anything with a spinning disk and two gigabytes of memory. The service pack is integrated, so setup finishes in one pass rather than sitting through a long update run afterwards.

The reduction is mostly optional components rather than system internals. Sample media, the tablet and handwriting stack, speech support, most bundled games, the media centre, backup and sync features, and the accessibility extras are stripped. The kernel, driver model, networking stack, Group Policy editor, Remote Desktop host and the Professional feature set are all left alone, so software and hardware drivers install normally.

The result boots faster, idles at a much lower memory footprint and installs onto small disks that a full image will not fit. It is worth being clear about what that costs: a lite image is not a supported configuration, some Windows features cannot be re-enabled after the fact, and anything depending on a stripped component has to be installed separately. For a dedicated machine doing one job, that trade is usually worth taking.

What it does well

Low footprint

Idles far below a stock install, which is the difference between usable and unusable on a machine with 2 GB of memory.

Service pack integrated

SP1 is slipstreamed into the image so setup completes without a long post install update pass.

Both architectures

x86 and x64 images in the same package, since a lot of the target hardware is still 32-bit only.

Professional features kept

Group Policy editor, Remote Desktop host, domain join and the encrypting file system are all present.

Small media

Fits on a 2 GB USB stick and installs onto disks that a full image cannot accommodate.

Changes in this build

  • Storage controller drivers refreshed so setup detects AHCI and common SATA controllers without a load driver step.
  • USB 3 support added to the boot environment for machines with no legacy ports.
  • Component removal list revised to keep the servicing stack fully intact.
  • Default services trimmed further for lower idle memory use.
  • Torrent payload repacked with larger pieces for faster verification.

What is in the package

  • Windows 7 Professional SP1 lite ISO, x86 and x64
  • Pre-activated state
  • Integrated storage and USB 3 drivers for the boot environment
  • Direct link and torrent magnet
  • Checksum list for both images

System requirements

Processor1 GHz or faster, x86 or x64
Memory1 GB for the 32-bit image, 2 GB for 64-bit
GraphicsDirectX 9 capable with WDDM 1.0 driver
Storage10 GB free, 16 GB recommended
Display800 x 600 minimum
FirmwareLegacy BIOS or UEFI with compatibility support enabled

Installation

  1. Verify the checksum before writing anything, a bad image shows up as a failure part way through setup.
  2. Write the ISO to a USB drive of 2 GB or larger, or burn it to a disc for very old machines.
  3. Back up the target disk, a clean install removes existing partitions.
  4. Boot the media and choose the architecture that matches the processor.
  5. After setup, install chipset and graphics drivers before anything else.

Before you start

Stripped components cannot be added back through the Windows features panel, reinstall from the full image if you need them.

This branch no longer receives mainstream updates, keep it off untrusted networks.

Some modern browsers and runtimes have dropped support for this line, check before relying on it for web work.

Questions about this title

What was removed?

Sample media, tablet and speech components, most bundled games, media centre, backup and the accessibility extras. System internals are untouched.

Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Both images are in the package and either can be written to media.

Will drivers still install?

Yes, the driver model is intact. Vendor packages install the same way they do on a full image.

Can I upgrade in place from this?

No, lite images should be treated as clean install only.

About this listing

This entry was checked on a clean install of x86 and x64 ISO before it was published, and it is rechecked whenever the package is rebuilt. The figures on this page come from the site index rather than from the publisher, so the download count is what people here have actually pulled.

If a mirror stops answering, use the contact form and it gets replaced. Reports about a specific title are handled faster than general messages because they name the file, the mirror and the point at which the transfer stopped.

Requests for a different version, a different language build or an older release go on the requests page. Older versions of a title are usually still held even when only the current one is listed.
