Overview

Format Factory is the utility people keep on a machine for the moment something arrives in the wrong container. Drop a folder of mixed video, audio or image files onto it, pick a target, and it converts the lot in one queued run without asking about codecs, bitrates or container quirks unless you want to open that panel yourself.

The format coverage is deliberately wide rather than deep. Video into the common delivery containers and codecs, audio into the usual lossy and lossless formats, images with resize, rotate and colour depth options, and rips from optical media and disc images into ordinary files. Device presets cover phones, tablets, consoles and older players for anyone converting for hardware that will not take a modern stream.

Alongside conversion sit the small jobs that would otherwise need three more applications. Joining and splitting clips without a re-encode where the streams allow it, muxing and demuxing audio and video tracks, extracting audio from video, repairing files with damaged indexes, and a simple recorder for capturing the screen or a connected camera into a file.

What it does well

Batch queue

Queue hundreds of files across different source formats with one output profile, and leave it running with an action on completion.

Wide format coverage

Video, audio, image and disc sources into the common delivery formats, with quality presets and a full manual parameter panel behind them.

Join, split and mux

Trim, join and split without re-encoding when the streams allow, plus track muxing and audio extraction from video.

Device presets

Output profiles for phones, tablets, consoles and older hardware players so a file plays without a second attempt.

Repair and recovery

Rebuild damaged indexes on files that will not seek, which often makes an unplayable recording usable again.

Changes in this build

  • Decoder set updated for current high efficiency video and audio streams.
  • Hardware accelerated encoding extended to more GPU families.
  • Queue panel rewritten with per-item progress and a retry action.
  • Image module gained batch rename alongside conversion.
  • Fixed audio drift on conversions from variable frame rate sources.

What is in the package

  • Format Factory installer, 32-bit and 64-bit
  • Video, audio, image and disc conversion modules
  • Device output profiles
  • Screen and camera recorder
  • Multilingual interface files, 62 languages

System requirements

ProcessorAny x86 or x64 processor, multicore recommended
Memory2 GB minimum, 4 GB for video work
GraphicsOptional GPU encoder support
Storage500 MB free plus space for output
Display1024 x 768 minimum
SystemWindows 7 through Windows 11

Installation

  1. Extract the archive to a local folder.
  2. Run the installer and decline any bundled extras it offers.
  3. Set the output folder before queueing the first batch.
  4. Enable hardware encoding in settings if the GPU supports it.
  5. Convert one short file first to confirm the profile is what you expected.

Before you start

Converting between two lossy formats always costs quality, go back to the original source where possible.

Hardware encoding is faster but usually larger at the same visual quality, test both on a short clip.

The recorder writes uncompressed by default, change the profile before a long capture.

Questions about this title

Does it convert in batch?

Yes, that is the main use. Queue a folder and leave it running.

Can it rip a disc image?

Yes, optical media and image files convert to ordinary output files.

Is hardware encoding supported?

Yes, on current GPUs, switched on in settings.

Can it join files without re-encoding?

Yes, when the source streams are compatible.

About this listing

This entry was checked on a clean install of Windows 7 / 8 / 10 / 11 (32-bit and 64-bit) before it was published, and it is rechecked whenever the package is rebuilt. The figures on this page come from the site index rather than from the publisher, so the download count is what people here have actually pulled.

If a mirror stops answering, use the contact form and it gets replaced. Reports about a specific title are handled faster than general messages because they name the file, the mirror and the point at which the transfer stopped.

Requests for a different version, a different language build or an older release go on the requests page. Older versions of a title are usually still held even when only the current one is listed.
