Overview
OBS Studio is the tool nearly every stream and a large share of recorded video passes through, and the reason is the scene model. A scene is a stack of sources, each one a display capture, a window, a game, a camera, a browser page, an image, a text field or an audio device, and each with its own transform, filters and visibility. Switching between scenes is a click or a hotkey, which is what turns a single camera into a production.
The audio side is a proper mixer rather than a volume slider. Every source has its own channel with gain, monitoring, a noise gate, a noise suppression filter, a compressor and a limiter, and channels can be routed to separate tracks so a recording keeps game audio, microphone and music apart for editing later. Studio mode gives you a preview and a program output so a scene is arranged before it goes live.
Output covers both recording and streaming from the same session. Hardware encoders on current GPUs handle high resolution output with almost no cost to the application being captured, recordings can be written in a format that survives a crash, and the replay buffer holds the last stretch of footage in memory so a moment already past can still be saved. The plug-in ecosystem then adds virtual cameras, deck control, scene automation and stream overlays on top.

Installation
- Extract the archive and close any other capture software.
- Run the installer and allow the virtual camera driver to register.
- Launch and run the auto configuration wizard for a starting output profile.
- Add your capture sources and set the recording folder to a fast drive.

Before you start
Game capture needs the application running in full screen or borderless, window capture is the fallback.
Record in a recoverable format if crashes are a risk, a raw output file is unusable after one.
