Overview
Recuva is the tool you reach for in the first five minutes after realising something is gone. It is small, it installs in seconds, it runs from a portable folder if the affected drive is the system drive, and for the common case of a file emptied from the recycle bin it will usually have the answer before a heavier recovery suite has finished its first scan.
The wizard asks what kind of file you lost and where it was, then scans and returns a list with a colour coded confidence indicator on each entry. Green means the data is intact and will recover cleanly, orange means it is partially overwritten, red means the space has been reused. That indicator saves an enormous amount of time compared with recovering everything and inspecting the results afterwards.
The deep scan handles the harder cases: a formatted card, a stick that suddenly asks to be formatted, or a volume whose file table is damaged. It walks the raw sectors matching file signatures, which finds the data but loses the original names. There is also a secure overwrite function for going the other direction, wiping free space or specific files so they cannot be recovered by this or anything else. The Professional configuration adds virtual drive support and automatic updates.

Installation
