Overview
VLC is the answer to a file that will not play. Every decoder it needs is compiled into the application, so there is no codec pack to hunt down, no filter chain to configure and no dependency on whatever the system media framework happens to support. It opens broken files, partially downloaded files, unusual container formats and discs that other players refuse to acknowledge.
Underneath the plain interface is a far more capable tool than most people ever use. It streams over HTTP, RTSP, RTP, UDP and HLS, records what it plays, converts between containers and codecs from a wizard, captures a desktop or a webcam, and can act as the server end of a stream rather than only the client. The command line exposes all of it for scripting.
Playback handling is where the daily value sits. Hardware decoding for the current formats, audio and subtitle track switching including external subtitle files with delay and speed correction, per-track audio delay, video filters for deinterlacing, cropping and colour adjustment, an equaliser with compressor and spatialiser, and a playlist system that remembers position across sessions.

Installation
- Extract the archive and run the installer.
- Choose which file associations you want it to take over.
- Skip the discard preferences option if you are upgrading and want your settings kept.
- Open preferences and enable hardware decoding if it is not already on.
- Set the default subtitle encoding if you work with non-Latin scripts.
Before you start
If a file stutters, switch the output module in preferences before blaming the file.
Hardware decoding on very old drivers can cause artefacts, disable it and the software path takes over.
The advanced preferences view exposes far more than the simple one, and resets to simple on upgrade.
