Overview
File recovery works because deleting a file usually removes the reference rather than the data. This scans a volume for those orphaned structures, rebuilds what it can from the file system records, and falls back to signature based carving for the parts where the records are gone. It handles deleted files, emptied recycle bins, formatted volumes, lost partitions and corrupted file systems.
Two scan modes cover different situations. The quick scan reads the file system records and returns results in minutes, which is enough for a recently deleted file. The deep scan reads the whole surface and reconstructs by signature, which takes hours on a large disk but finds files after a format or a partition table loss. Results can be previewed before recovery so time is not wasted restoring the wrong thing.
Two extras make it more useful than a plain recovery tool. A bootable rescue environment can be built onto a USB drive to recover from a machine that no longer starts, which is the situation people are usually in. And the repair module rebuilds video and photo files whose headers or indexes were damaged, using an intact sample from the same camera as a reference for the broken ones.

Installation
- Do not install onto the drive you are trying to recover from, that overwrites the data.
- Extract the archive and install to a different disk or a USB drive.
- Run a quick scan on the target volume first.
- If nothing useful appears, start a deep scan and leave it to finish.
- Recover to a different drive than the one being scanned.
Before you start
Stop using the affected drive immediately, every write reduces what can be recovered.
Deep scans on a large mechanical disk can run for many hours, plan for it.
A failing drive should be imaged first and the image scanned instead of the drive.
