Overview
V-Ray is the renderer that architectural and product visualisation settled on, and this build plugs into the 3ds Max releases from the last several cycles rather than only the newest one. It installs as a render engine and a set of materials, lights and cameras inside the host, so scenes stay in the modelling application and nothing is exported to a separate package.
Two engines ship together and share the same scene. The CPU engine is the reliable path for heavy production frames with large textures and displacement, and the GPU engine turns the same setup around in a fraction of the time on a card with enough memory. Switching between them is a dropdown, not a rebuild, and the interactive renderer updates the frame live while lights and materials are adjusted.
The supporting toolset is as important as the core. Physically based materials with layered coats and sheen, real world camera controls including exposure, white balance and depth of field, a sun and sky model, IES profile lights, proxy geometry for scenes that would not otherwise fit in memory, fur and scatter tools, and a frame buffer with full post processing, light select passes and denoising built in.

Installation
- Install the host modelling application first.
- Extract the archive and close 3ds Max completely.
- Run setup and select the host cycles you want the plug-in registered into.
- Choose whether to install the standalone renderer alongside the plug-in.
- Open the host, set V-Ray as the active renderer, and load a sample scene.
Before you start
Installing another host cycle later means rerunning setup so the plug-in registers into it.
The GPU engine needs enough card memory for the whole scene, it does not page gracefully.
Turn off the licence service check in the settings so the configuration stays as installed.
