PDF-XChange Editor is the alternative people move to when the heavyweight PDF suite becomes too slow to open a file. It launches in a second or two, opens large documents without a progress bar sitting on screen, and still carries the full professional toolset underneath a tabbed interface that stays out of the way.
The Plus configuration is the one worth having because it adds form creation and the portfolio tools on top of the standard editor. Text inside an existing document is editable with reflow, images can be replaced or resampled, pages reorder by dragging thumbnails, and documents merge or split with bookmarks and links carried across intact. OCR runs locally over scanned pages and writes a searchable text layer under the original image.

Installation
- Extract the archive to a local folder.
- Run setup and tick the printer driver if you want PDF output from other applications.
- Select the OCR language data you need, it cannot be added later without rerunning setup.
- Apply the included configuration step before first launch.
- Open a PDF once and set the file association if you want it as the default handler.
Before you start
The printer driver installs as a system printer and stays after the editor is removed unless it is unticked during uninstall.
Turn off the update check so the Plus configuration is not replaced.
Redaction only becomes permanent once it is applied and the file is saved, marking alone does not remove anything.
